CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE POLICY

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE PRESCRIBING

Controlled substances are a drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession, or use is regulated by a government, such as illicitly used drugs or prescription medications that are designated by law. Examples (not an exhaustive list) of controlled substances utilized in psychiatry may include stimulants (adderall, ritalin, etc), benzodiazepines (xanax, klonopin, ativan, etc), and hypnotics (ambien, lunesta, belsomra, etc). Careful consideration is made prior to initiating a controlled substance into a treatment plan. No patient should assume automatically that a controlled substance will be part of their treatment plan. Policies regarding controlled substances are detailed more in depth in the patient treatment plan. Telepsychiatry may be utilized during the course of your treatment plan but is not guaranteed. Provided to the left is the most recent proposed rules from the DEA regarding prescribing controlled substances through telemedicine. Patients should also be aware pharmacies have become more stringent in regards to filling a controlled substance and may at their discretion at times refuse to fill your prescription. We will try to work with both the patient and pharmacy if this occurs but ultimately we cannot force a pharmacy to fill any prescription.
